Microsoft Volume Shadow Copies to protect data from deletion
December 17th, 2010

Microsoft Volume Shadow Copies protect against accidential deletion of files

Microsoft Shadow Copies is a function on Windows 2003 & 2008 Servers, which gives users quick access to deleted, corrupt or previous versions of files. It can also give administrators a quick and easy method to roll back to previous versions of simple flat file ‘database’ applications. Be aware Shadow Copy will not protect complex database applications such as SQL, Exchange and the like.

How to Enable Microsoft Shadow Copy for Users

To enable shadow copies, from your server console, open My Computer, right click the drive  holding the data and shares in question, select: Properties, Shadow Copies tab and then select the relevant drive and Enable. By default shadow copies are taken twice a day, this can be adjusted through the settings button.

User Access to previous versions of files and folders with Shadow Copy

When users view a network folder hosted on a server running Windows Server 2003, they can ask to see all old versions of a file or directory

Simply right click your network drive, Select Properties  & the tab Previous Versions, you then browse previous versions of files and folders and either restore complete directories or copy and paste out individual files.

All Knowall Clients with IT Support Contracts will be advised to enable Shadow Copies and an engineer will action on your behalf.
